肛門內括約肌的生理功能主要是閉合肛門和協助排便作用。為不隨意肌。它平常呈收縮狀態,關閉肛門,防止直腸內的糞便、液體、氣體流出,維持直腸一定的張力,這種收縮狀態除排便時可持續工作,不易疲勞。當直腸內充滿糞便時它自動張開(肛門內括約肌鬆弛),僅協助排便,無括約肛門的功能。肛門外括約肌為環繞肛門內括約肌周圍的橫紋肌,有括約肛門的功能。在產生便意感時,如果外界條件不允許排便,就可以通過收縮外括約肌來閉合肛門,控制排便,但外括約肌易疲勞,持續收縮一般只能維持55秒,超過此時間,大便就控制不住而排出體外。
